The Cousins Family History
Two families have been on the cutting edge of fishing tackle since the inception of modern versions. Wade Cunningham and Bill Buchanan are the names behind Cousins Tackle, which has been associated with just about all the top tackle companies such as Sage, Seeker, Sevenstrand, Fenwick, Berkley, Spiderwire, Stren, Abu Garcia, Abel and Shikari.

It was in the 1960s that two family patriarch brothers-in-law-Buck Buchanan (father of Bill Buchanan) and Bill Cunningham (father of Wade Cunningham)-purchased the sportfisher Buckwheat, which also became the families' new on-the-water office. A couple years and a few fishing trips later, the families came together to start making some of the first proprietary vinyl offshore lure skirts. This would change the way people would troll forever.

Sevenstrand/Fenwick was so impressed with the skirts and components, it purchased Republic Plastic Molders and relocated its plant to Westminster, where Bill Cunningham and Buck Buchanan became division managers. Bill handled the production of  Fenwick Rods and Buck handled the Sevenstrand Wire and Lure division. It didn't take long for Bill and Buck to bring their sons into the mix. Wade began heading up quality control, specs and engineering while Bill Buchanan ended up as a production supervisor in the Fenwick Rod factory. At the time Fenwick was building more than 1,000 rods per day. This was where Wade Cunningham had a hand in building the first High Modulus Graphite tubular style rods ever built. These are the precursors to the modern rods we fish with today.

The 2016 season is a wrap!
Our hats are off to all of the anglers that participated with the BBT Circuit.
This year was another outstanding year that saw over 2300 teams compete in 6 regions. Paying back over $300,000.00, the anglers lined their pockets with cash throughout the year.
In many of our regions the Angler of the year race had great competition with a tie in the Central Valley Region, a Husband and Wife Team taking it in the Northern Region.
  Congratulations to the following teams.
Northern Region
Craig & Barb Smith
Delta / Wine Region
Troy Fleming and Kasey Rhyme
SoCal TST Region

Our 2016 T.O.C. was held on the California Delta out of Russo's Marina with 192 team coming from all over California and some from other states. The 2016 year was bigger and better than ever! On Friday Our Tournament of Champions dinner, hosted by the Hook Line and Sinker in Oakley kicked off the festivities.
The event included our sponsors showcase, showing off their latest products for the upcoming 2017 year.

The dinner was an opportunity for all the anglers came together to celebrate the year and to make lasting memories.
Then on Saturday morning the attitudes of the anglers changed. That's when their minds were on the top prize of $20,000 to the winning team. 192 teams blasted off competing for over $51,000 in cash and prizes. With the changing weather conditions, we had during the week leading up to the event, the top team needed to be focused and that's what the team of Ron Howe and Bob Miller were.  After the first day of the tournament they were sitting in 2nd place with 21.80lbs, less then 2lbs from our leaders Lee Yang & Khu Yang with 23.62 lb. Continuing their focus and determination, they backed up their first day weight with another 21.28lbs with a two day total of 43.08lbs securing the 2016 T.O.C. Title. Ok now for a little house keeping and moving foward for the 2017 season. As everyone knows, we have always tried to accommodate everyone fishing in the BBT when it came down to boat size (Big Boat / Small Boat Division). This year we didn't have a lot of participation in the Small Boat Division in all of our regions so with that being said starting 2017, we will not have a "Small Boat" division. All teams fishing a tournament will be fishing against one another and remember it's not the size of the boat that catches the fish. Also with the newest rule change coming from the BASS Tour on rod lengths, we will be continuing the existing 8ft rod rule. During the 2017 year, we will consider the impact that the 10ft rod allowance will have on our anglers and our circuit. We will revisit the situation to consider a "Rule Revision" for future seasons.  Also we are adjusting the qualifications for the T.O.C. because of the fact that we had over 2300 anglers this year, we had well over 200 teams qualify for this years event.  Finding a venue that can accommodate a large field of this capacity is next to impossible.  So moving forward next year here is the amended rule regarding the T.O.C. Qualifactions.
The TOC will be a separate event, to be held at the end of the season. BBT anglers are eligible to win a grand prize given away to the overall winner of the event. All other BBT money will be kept separate. To qualify you need to fish a minimum of 4 events in one region with the same partner and have a qualifying score based on the total of your top 5 scores in one region with the same partner. An additional 5 point
bonus will be added to your score if you fish all 6 events in that same region. BBT will take the top 40% . Teams with the same partner fishing any 7 or more regional events in the BBT will automatically qualify for the TOC (Opens are not included). Teams qualifying for the TOC will be announced at the conclusion of the full BBT schedule of all regular season events for the year.
