Although the cool 58 degree morning was relatively calm at the 06:49a.m. blast off, by mid morning the day turned into at a bone chilling, clothes soaking, wind howling and cove finding tournament. But, what better way to find out how good the west coast teams are, then when Mother Nature decides to throw in some nasty weather into the fishing mix.

Well, Mother Nature was no obstacle for Robert Duncan of San Juan Bautista and Clark Poulson from San Martin fought the fish and the elements to show up to the scales with a 26.21 bag of healthy northern strained bass.  They sealed their sack with a 6.34 kicker. A $1,455.00 cash prize may not have dried them out much; but, it sure warmed up the wallet.  They said they fanned casted into areas they knew were holding fish.  Second place went to Jim Spillers and Johnny McNally of Bakersfield. They went hunting bass in the river, which proved to be a successful decision. They weighed 5 healthy bass that totaled up to 24.19 pounds. They also had the big fish of the tournament with a fat 7.98 bass.  And, they were rewarded with a second place prize of $1,040.00. Jim said throwing brush hogs up shallow did the trick. Their fish came in less than 5 feet of water. They culled out several limits, and they early morning reaction bait bite was nowhere to be had.  Jim said his copper colored polarized Eye Surrender glasses were some of the best glasses he’s worn to see into the water. Eye Surrender is one of our quality sponsors supporting the BBT Circuit.  Rounding out third place money and 1st place small boat division was James Rawson and James Gutierrez of Lancaster spent a lot of their day in a wind spinning aluminum boat; however, there’s no spinning their bag of 22.39 pounds, and the big fish of their division and second big fish with their 7.85 kicker. Good job! And, they earned the $660.00 third place money as well.  They were also the farthest traveling team coming to our event and received a goodie bag from one of listed sponsors. Fourth place was our visitors from Fresno, Joe Alanis and his partner Raul Guillen.  21.60 pounds netted them $335.00 dollars; however, their big fish of 4.93 didn’t quite cut the grade for any of the big fish money. No doubt the cash helped with the fuel costs for sure. Brad Everett and Jim McLauhlin of Bakersfield weighed in the last bag over 20 pounds with a sack weighing 20.24 and $200 bucks to help with entry fees and gas. They also received the cull up award…just one fatter fish would have secured a heftier payday. Next time for sure.  And rounding out our top 6 was Casey Langley of Nipoma & Justin Goodman of San Luis Obispo. Their 19.62 sack earned them $175.00 dollars. Their 5.59 kicker wasn’t enough to get that extra boost from the big fish pot, but a nice fish nonetheless. Mike Pierce of Prunedale and Scott Pierce of Santa Maria cashed in on their 6.96 big fish with  $90.00 bucks.  Watch your mailbox guys.  And, Candy Merlo & Steve Merlo of Bakersfield took the 5th spot & last of the big fish money for their 5.84 kicker, which was good for $30 bucks. John Beckett, who started fishing with Bill Cook finally hooked up with each other. They both have worked out their schedules to fish these events and things have been absolutely wacky for them at times…so who better to receive that bag of goodies. The eye surrenders winners weren’t present so that great prize will roll over to the TOC. And, Batrum’s Marine cert winning boat had left as well. So, we will roll the cert over to the next tournament. So, expect to certificates for service to be drawn at San Antonio on the 28th.  Hopefully we can talk Mr. Batrum into coming out again. I know the coast teams are spending money to qualify for the receipt drawings. Get those into me during sign ups guys. It’s always great when our sponsors show up at our events. They get a little time to say hi, and talk about their product, which is what Brian Orange got to do Saturday. Who-Be-Do-Jigs provide quality jigs and drop shot weights for us to give away. Don’t hesitate to call Brian or his brother Shawn at 559-997-0200. Let them know you’re a BBT team member and you will receive great discounts. The Irwin Tool award was determined with a weight of 9.20 pounds without going over. Snow & Gibson in boat 13 with their 8.95 was closest; but, you must be present to win, so more giveaways at the TOC. The weight was determined by Irwin Tools initials (IT) “I” is the ninth letter, and “T” is the 20th letter, hence 9.20. Best we could do with no internet connection. I want to thank our sponsors, who choose to support BBT throughout the season. We encourage all of our teams to look at who takes care of them. Then make decisions on where to spend your hard earned money.
