The second Coastal Region tournament for the Best Bass Tournament circuit was held at Santa Margarita Lake on February 23, 2013.  Being from the Fresno area, this was a new adventure for myself and family.  I had been to the lake last year with Terry Greenwald, but my daughter and mom had never been there.  Putting on the tournament for the Coastal Region Anglers was great.  The staff, anglers and Lake employees made us very comfortable and welcomed. Our day started at midnight when we left Fresno and started our drive to Santa Margarita Lake.  A stop in Kettlemen City for breakfast at Denny's and then on to the Lake.  We arrived at the lake between three thirty and four o'clock in the morning and too much of our surprise there were staff members and anglers already in line.  In about ten minutes,  tables were set up, generator started, lights on, clip boards set out and registration forms ready for the anglers to register for the event. Park staff arrived around 5:00 a.m. to open the gates and for the mussel inspection so at that time registration was moved down by the dock.  For the second time we set up the tables and paperwork for registration.  Everyone of the anglers were very helpful and enthusiastic.   We ended up with thirty boats.  As it became time for the blast-off Kevin headed down to the dock with his bullhorn in hand.   Phil VanZee pulled lucky boat number three for the first boat to blast off.  Kevin went over the Lake rules and off limit areas.  He then went over the two flights scheduled to come in at 3:00 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.  The one small boat was sent on his way and then boat number three was released.  In less than five minutes the tournament was under way. The new director for the Coastal Region, Chris Gilkison showed up for training.  Chris was upset that he was late but some slow traffic was in his way.  It was too windy to put up any of the canopies for fear that they might get broken.  Several banners were set up along the walkway fence and tables, PA system, weigh tables and scales were ready for the return of the anglers.  After the money and paperwork was balanced there was time for some lunch and a little snooze.  It was too cold to do anything else. Our staff boats came in and bags were placed at the dock for the anglers to use.  This was a drive by weigh-in so the anglers had to load their boats, bag their fish and drive over to the scales.  One by one the bags of fish were weighted and then returned to the lake.  The Coastal Region anglers weighted in eighty seven fish with a total combined weight of 240.99 pounds.  Job well done guys. After the weigh-in, Chris and Mom set down to tally the weigh slips and arrange and balance the money envelopes for the awards. A nice sevection of Emerald Nuts along with several containers of homemade goodies were laid out for the anglers and their family to enjoy.   The anglers were ready for the results. First place went to the team of Dustin Selck of Morro Bay and Phil VanZee of Atascadero with their five fish bag weighing in at 20.66 pounds.   In that bag was found the first place big fish toping the scales at 6.91 pounds.  Phil and Dustin fished in the river portion of the lake and used crank baits and an Alabama rig to catch their fish with.  A paycheck in the amount of $1,510.00 was taken home by these two anglers for a great day of fishing.  Good Job. The team of Mike Guherrez and Juan Acosta both from Salinas took second place with their five fish bag weighing in at 17.05 pounds.  Mike and Juan were in all of the options and took home $725.00 for their great fishing.  These anglers fished shallow with spinner baits and fished the main lake all day long.  Mike and Juan would like to thank Nelsons Outboards for their sponsorship. From San Luis Obispo, the team of Nick Gregg and Kyle Gregg took third place for their five fish bag weighing in at 16.24 pounds.  This team also brought in the fourth place big fish at 5.13 pounds.  Nike and Kyle used slow roll swim baits and Wacky Rig weightless worms while fishing the river and rocky parts of the main lake.  A check in the amount of $550.00 was taken home by these two anglers.  They would like to thank Tackle Warehouse for sponsoring them.  To be in the top ten boats you would have had to have at least 12.84 pounds of fish.  That's a big bag of fish.  A tackle bag was awarded to the first out of the money, the team of Ty McCutcheon and Brian Beckham.  The second tackle bag went to Clay Gates and Jessi Sims.  The life jacket went to Dan Barrios and Charlie Barrios.  The 20/20 eye surrender sun glasses went to the team of Clay Gates and Jessi Sims and the Lenox boat weight was 7.25 pounds, so the team of Clayton Rogerson and Ronald Rogerson took home tools with their weight of 5.32 pounds.Sponsor Tackle Store Receipts Program – If you purchase tackle valued at $20 OR MORE from our Sponsor Tackle Stores or go online to make purchases through the Optimum Baits and ima websites, you will receive a discount for being a member of the BBT.
