I think I’m finally recuperating after our 4/28/12 tournament at San Antonio. Having our tournament scheduled a week before the Wild Flower Triathlon is a scheduling error that will not happen again. The wildflower event brings into the area 30,000 participants. That equates to a heck of a lot of swimmers. Bass boats & swimmers together is very bad Juju in my opinion.  About an hour after blast off Saturday morning I observed swimmers out past the closed off swim areas and actually swimming in open water. Anyway…we finished another derby without incident. We weighed in our first fish around 3:00 and weighed our last fish at 3:33.  That’s approximately 33 minutes or 1.22 minutes per team. That’s well under the 3 minute DFG rule. And, once again I thank all the teams for their cooperation. We were successful in a 100% live release of all of our bass. Good job!l First place honors went to Lee and Jerrad Johnson of Bakersfield. They averaged a bag consisting of 2 pound fish and capped their 14.66 bag  with a 6.21 LM kicker. Lee said Jerrad caught the big fish first thing in the morning on jerk bait and caught some of the other fish using jigs. Second place went to Mike McClassen and Greg Enns of Bakersfield. This was their first tournament and spent the day all over the lake throwing worms. They didn’t get a big bite; but, they managed a bag of solid keepers over 2 pounds with a big fish of 2.74. John Ballew and Ken Allerton of Hollister basically had the same solid bag as our second place team. Quality fish just over 2 pounds with 2.57 big fish totaled their bag at 11.89 and a solid third place position. John Flynn and Scott Lamberton produced a solid bag totaling 11.09, and had a nice 4.11 LM kicker to earn them a 4th place finish. Brad Everett and Jim McLaughlin finished off the money spots with 10.88 bag which earned them the 5th place position. Rick Long and Rocky O’Neill picked up a 4.35 LM for 2nd big fish of the event. Once again swag is always a big part of the BBT experience and Saturday was no exception. During  blast off I observed the usual wake creating, boat bouncing experience. I saw one of our small aluminum boats taking a little more rocking  than the longer fiberglass boats. So without a doubt there is a great need for quality life vests a board the smaller vessel. So, our first “Wear it” life vest went to Jaime Gutierrez who will have  a quality inflatable vest in the Tracker boat during the  Santa Margarita blast off on May 19th. Batrum’s Marine Service donated  lower unit service, which was being awarded to the first out of the money. However, the must be present rule applies so Kevin Vaughn & Tom Garner missed out on this one.  The certificates will rollover to our final tournament at Nacimiento on June 9th. Eric Batrum is offering one heck of a gift so let’s not forget who to call when you’re in Paso and run into boat trouble. We will have a BBQ and give out plenty of swag as well as announce our angler of the year. So, that will be a must attend event. That BBQ is going to be made possible by Scott Lamberton, who will be bringing his grill on wheels. Also, Lee & Jerrad Johnson has agreed to sponsor trophies for our sponsors. Our sponsors will be invited as well, and you will all be given a chance to show your appreciation at that time. Our Irwin Tool weight was closest to 9.11. That was Steve & Candy Merlo. Again you must be present to win. Why did I choose 9.11 as the weight? 200 swimmers practicing and 27 bass boats on the same lake. Need I say more. The 20/20 Eye Surrender  sunglasses worked out for a couple of teams this past tournament.  When your humble director took out the weight slip for the lower unit servicing and placed the slip into the certificate envelope. Then, when I counted down 20 place for the glasses we were short a slip so Poulson and Duncan came up as the twentieth spot, should have been Tracy & Tracy. So, the phone calls have been made and both teams will be seeing better due to a director’s error.  That’s how we roll! *Side note: Tracy senior spent the morning drying off after a step off the bow. Maybe I should draw for the Eye Surrender glasses before the blast off, hmmm? Beckett, Cook, Spillers, and McNally were winners of various baits donated by who-be-do jigs, Bait Barn and other Team Spillers and Spiller’s. I would also like to personally thank the sponsors who are supporting us and the anglers alike: Emerald Premium Snacks, Berkley, Abu Garcia, Lowrance, Bait Barn, The Fishing Instructor, Yakima Baits, Technology Integrators, Hildebrandt, Poe’s Plugs, Timber Tiger, Ima, Optimum Baits, Hooked on Adventures, General Tires, Eye Surrender Sunglasses, Out of Bounds, Gowans Printing, AGS Apparel, Sinister Wacky Worms, M & B Wacky Tool, Adelaide Inn, Central Valley Sportsmen’s Boat & RV Show. Batrum’s Marine Service, Lake San Antonio Resorts, and Nacimiento Resorts for all their support. I want to thank my staff for their dedication in ensuring BBT events are run smoothly and efficiently. I want to thank the teams for their continued dedication to their fish handling which has allowed us to release every fish caught in the past 4 tournaments. See you all at Lake Santa Margarita on May 19, 2012. I will be posting additional information very soon. It should be an awesome bite. Call me with ideas, complaints or winning lotto numbers.  THX, Terry Greenwaldt  BBT Director Coastal Region
