HOT! HOT! HOT! WIND! WIND! WIND! That was the weather and the anglers both in the afternoon. After setting up the banners, tables, putting out the awards, handouts and gift bags we headed down to the lake side to setup the scales. It was so hot that Kevin and some of his staff went for a swim while waiting to start the weight-in. It seems that one of the anglers were just as hot as the staff because while he was leaning over the side of the boat to cool down he lost his footing , fell off his boat and into the water. Hopefully he didn’t scare too many fish away. The day started off windy and cool. It was so windy that it blew over the 10 by 15 pop-up that we use for registration. Thank you Roger Lockhart for catching the pop-up before it was ruined. The wind stayed around all day but the air became hot. You just never know from one tournament to the next what the weather will be like. We arrived at the lake at 3:45 a.m. and our first boat showed up five minutes later. It was one of our staff boats but it showed up. We had a total of twenty five boats, one small boat and twenty four large boats, show up for the Pine Flat Lake Tournament. Our numbers were down and it was a little disappointing but the anglers went out there and did a fantastic job. Way to go Central Valley. Blast off was set for safe light. At 5:40 a.m. Kevin sent off the small boat. Jon Ramos pulled the lucky number 18 as the first large boat to go out. We know that Jon didn’t pull any favors because his boat number was 16, the second to the last boat to go out. There’s always next time, Jon. Weight-in started early when one of our boats had trolling motor problems and needed to call it a day. This was at about 1:30 p.m. Instead of loading up their boat and heading home, Mike and Debbie stayed for the awards. That is what we like to see and what we call good sportsmanship. Thank you Mike and Debbie for staying and supporting your fellow anglers fishing the BBT. The official weight-in started with our first flight of boats checking in at 3:00 p.m. and the second flight at 3:15 p.m. The weight-in went so well that the scales were officially closed at 3:27 p.m. with all 25 boats bring in fish. Awards started at 3:40 p.m. with several sponsored handouts and an ice chest full of ice water and cold 51/Fifty energy drinks. Steve Magill and Adam Belmont won the Wacky Award, Don Hendrix and Roger Cummings won the Tackle Award, Roger Lockhart and John Scott took the Cull Often Award and Steve Swarts and John Horton received the inflatable PFD vest sponsored by the Wear-It Champaign. The Lenox Tools weight was 5.41 pounds and the boat closest to the weight had already left for the day. At our previous tournament at Don Pedro we had two anglers that stayed to the end of the awards, walked up to the first place winners and congratulated them on a job well done. This is something that we would like to see all the time but does not happen on a regular basis. Kevin decided to award the Lenox Tools Award to Eric Rivera and Craig Gong for their outstanding show of sportsmanship. Jason Higginbotham of Clovis and Dennis Bingham of Madera took home first place with five fish and a weight of 9.80 pounds. Along with first place plaques they took home a check in the amount of $1,105.00. Jason and Dennis fished the main lake used flukes and weightless worms for lures and fished top water and worms. They want to thank their sponsors, Higgs Jigs, Bray’s Serious Baits, Juice Plus, R H & Sons Construction and their wives and families. Good job on taking first place at Pine Flat. Second place went to the team of Steve Magill of Sanger and Adam Belmont of Clovis. They brought in a five bag limit weighting in at 9.50 pounds. Being in all the options and also taking second place in big fish weighting 2.63 pounds these two anglers took home a paycheck in the amount of $850.00. While also fishing the main lake Steve and Adam used top water lures and weightless worms, along with using drop shot and jig head spook methods. Great job fishing. With a five fish bag weighting in at 9.07 pounds the team of Joe Alanis and Rick White both of Fresno took third place. A check in the amount of $505.00 was awarded to these two anglers. Joe and Rick fished up river using power fishing methods and spinner bait lures. These two anglers would like to thank their sponsors, Pro Worms, Bully Baits, Hardcore Bass Fishing and Greenway Auto Body. Keep up the good job. Big Fish of the day went to the team of Steve Lane and Vincent Melella weighting in a black bass at 2.91 pounds. For this fish they received a check in the amount of $225.00. There are times that getting into big fish is worth that $20.00 and this was one of those times. There was a total of 115 fish caught for the day and a total weight of 150.93 pounds. After all is said and done each and every one of you anglers did a great job fishing at Pine Flat Lake and I for one can’t wait to see how each of you do at the last 2012 Central Valley Region Tournament of the Best Bass Tournament Circuit being held at Millerton Lake on Saturday, June 9, 2012. Hope to see you there.
